This article explores Edward IIs transgressive nature in sex according to various Psychoanalysis perspectives including the Freuds description of the anal-sadistic phase of childhood. Edwards rebellion can be traced to the childhood anal-sadistic phase and various unconscious symptoms from castration anxiety originated in the transfer process from Imagination Order to Symbol Order by the Fathers Law. The childhood anal-sadistic phase and castration anxiety make infants refuse to release their stool under parents compulsion, assert their independence, and experience many Oedipal fragments like masochism, egocentrism and infantile rebellious instincts, and so on. Edward also expresses aggressively his obstinacy such as keeping love with Gaveston despite his nobless objection. Edwards anal defiance(sadism) of authority(depression) is accompanied with various instincts transformation such as primary narcissism, megalomania, masochism, and so on. Eventually Edward on anal-sadistic phase and Oedipal fragments suffers from the Oedipal conflicts between the body politic and body natural(his personal body). This situation leads to the pity of Edward and makes the audience observe his Oedipal tragedy. |
